Seeking to know Jesus and to make Him known to others

The Remain Campaign

Following Thursday’s historic EU Referendum you may be glad or sad, distraught or delighted, filled with anticipation or apprehension, or just relieved it’s all over at long last. Christians have very sincerely supported either side of the debate, and I am aware of families within CCBC where people voted in different ways. The recovery of familial, as well as national unity may well be required!
The Bible clearly teaches us to leave and separate ourselves from evil associations – for instance in Ephesians 5v11 we are commanded to “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” Jesus also very clearly told us that we “do not belong to the world” and that He has chosen us “out of the world” (John 15v19). However, we are not to withdraw completely from society – Jesus was regularly criticised by the religious establishment for spending time with tax collectors and ‘sinners’. Whichever way you may have voted – and indeed irrespective of the Referendum outcome – the Bible has some great things to say about “remaining”, including:
• Psalm 102v27 “But You [God] remain the same, and Your years will never end.”
• Psalm 146v6 “the Lord … remains faithful for ever.”
• John 15v4 “Remain in Me, and I will remain in you.”
• John 15v5 “If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.”
• John 15v9 “As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Now remain in My love.”
• 1 Corinthians 13v13 “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
• 2 Timothy 2v13 “if we are faithless, He will remain faithful, for He cannot disown Himself.”
God has an extraordinary remain campaign, both in His unchanging nature and in His love for us His people – may we also seek to remain totally in Him.
Peace and Grace
Paul
