First of all, may I wish you all a Happy, Healthy, Holy, Hopeful (any more H’s?!) New Year. A popular feature of each New Year is, of course, the making of resolutions – to lose weight, to exercise more, to be more organised etc. More ‘spiritual’ resolutions might include to read through the Bible during 2021, to spend more time in prayer etc.
There are actually a number of specific resolutions referred to in the Bible, although these are not ‘limited’ to a New Year focus. For instance, David declares to the Lord in Psalm 17v3: “I have resolved that my mouth will not sin.” Daniel, along with his 3 friends, famously “resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine” (Daniel 1v8) when taken into exile in Babylon. David also proclaims in Psalm 101v3: “I will set before my eyes no vile thing” – such an important, yet so challenging, commitment in our highly visual age (– and notice that “vile” is simply “evil” rearranged).
Alongside such resolutions there is one which I pray we will all especially pursue – Paul wrote to the Corinthians: “For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2v2). Our vision / motto at CCBC is “Seeking to know Jesus Christ and to make Him known to others” – it’s very much based on this verse. Our total priority must be Jesus (our Saviour) Christ (the unique Messiah), knowing Him in a deep, passionate sense, focusing on His death on the cross. Why is this? We will need eternity to begin to answer – but very simply: (i) He is absolutely worthy; and (ii) it is in Jesus Christ alone, and in particular through His cross, that we find true Happiness, Health, Holiness, Hope etc.
Peace and Grace
