A dangerous weapon! – 15 November 2020

I was particularly struck by Jim Henderson’s remarkable thought during his wonderful testimony last Sunday morning that he is able to enter the Aldershot Garrison, wearing a mask and armed with a double-edged sword!

Jim was, of course, referring to the word of God and the description of it in Hebrews 4v12: “For the word of God is living and active.  Sharper than any double-edged sword …”.  Such a sword is particularly dangerous as, clearly, it can ‘cut both ways’, giving great advantage in battle.  The description of the word of God in this verse goes on to explain its ability to penetrate “the thoughts and attitudes of the heart”.

We can, and must, have total confidence in such a weapon – indeed, note that the word of God is sharper than any double-edged sword!  Its double-edged nature may also refer to both its offensive and defensive characteristics and benefits.  These qualities – and its extraordinary sharpness – arise from the stunning fact that God’s words are identical with His actions.  When God said “Let there be light”, there was light – He didn’t then need to go and turn on a switch or light a candle!  Consequently God’s word “will not return to [Him] empty, but will accomplish what [He] desire[s] and achieve the purpose for which [He] sent it” (Isaiah 55v11).

Let’s really pray for Jim, for SASRA and for each other – that we would know, trust and share God’s word and so be dangerous people with a very dangerous weapon!

Peace and Grace
