Seeking to know Jesus and to make Him known to others

Love like this – 14 April 2019

We’ve been listening in the car to a CD by the American Christian singer / songwriter Lauren Daigle.  Her voice is very similar to Adele’s – or perhaps it’s the other way round?  Anyway, I’ve been continually playing one track called “Love like this” which contains these simple, yet glorious words:

“What have I done to deserve love like this?  I cannot earn what You so freely give.”

I just find Daigle’s voice and melody – but above all these words – so wonderful and powerful.

We are now entering ‘Holy Week’ when we marvel at God’s incomparable love to us through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ.  John introduces Jesus washing the disciples’ feet with these words:  “He now showed them the full extent of His love” (13v1b).  The words “full extent” can also be translated “to the very end”.  Jesus’ love is, therefore, to the utmost limit, either in terms of its depth or its length (which, of course, Paul prays that we’ll grasp – Ephesians 3v17-19).

Jesus demonstrates such love in the foot-washing which points forward to His ultimate sacrifice on the cross.  Bruce Milne comments:  “In the end there is no explanation of the cross other than the love of God.  There can be no other, for we certainly do not deserve it and can never earn it.”  We’re back then to Daigle’s words:

“What have I done to deserve love like this?  I cannot earn what You so freely give.”

Peace and Grace
