Menu Formule v A La Carte – 2 September 2018

We have returned safely after a wonderful holiday in France, enjoying great weather, beautiful scenery and very good food.  Talking of food you may be aware that many French restaurants offer the choice of a Menu Formule or various options from an A La Carte menu.  The Menu Formule is a fixed price menu for either two or three courses, with limited choices for each.  Whilst the range of food may be restricted, the Menu Formule generally represents really good value for money and often includes ‘chef specialities’.  We certainly found the Menu Formule to be excellent on a few occasions.

All of this caused me to think about the will of God for my life – is it more like a Menu Formule or can I ‘pick and mix’ from an A La Carte list?  May I suggest that God’s will is a Menu Formule – designed by Heaven’s Master Chef for my good and my delight?  He knows exactly what I need to flourish and to be healthy spiritually – I can’t just ‘pick and mix’.  Paul writes familiar words in Romans 12v2: “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.”  Paul also encourages the Ephesians to “find out what pleases the Lord” (5v10).

God’s Menu Formule is not, therefore, in any way constrictive or negative, but pleasing – both to Him and to us.  It’s why we pray “Thy will be done on earth – in my life, in my family, in CCBC, in this nation – as it is in heaven.”

Peace and Grace

Paul
