The traditional theme of this fourth and final Sunday of Advent is love. This is rightly the climax of Advent when we remember and celebrate again that “God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3v16). The hope, peace and joy that we experience as Christians, and we remembered in the first three weeks of Advent, all flow from God’s love.
Let me paraphrase some words of C H Spurgeon which I read a couple of days ago: God never turns from His love, but He soon turns from His righteous anger. His love to His chosen people flows from His very nature, whilst His anger arises only because of His holiness. God loves because He is love. He disciplines us because it is necessary for our good.
May we all be able to appreciate even more this Christmastime God’s amazing love for us. The apostle of love, John, wonderfully expresses this: “This is how God showed His love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4v9,10).
Wishing you a truly Happy Christmas
Peace and Grace
