Seeking to know Jesus and to make Him known to others

“Aaron’s staff that budded”

In Numbers 17 we read of the miraculous account of the budding of Aaron’s staff. The Israelites had again been grumbling against the Lord so He instructed the leaders of each of the 12 tribes to place their staff in the Tent of Meeting (the Tabernacle). Aaron’s staff was included as he headed up the tribe of Levi.

The next day, not only had Aaron’s staff sprouted but it “had budded, blossomed and produced almonds” (v8)! It was then retained “as a sign to the rebellious” (v10) and kept within the Ark of the Covenant (Hebrews 9v4).

There are at least two wonderful pictures that can be seen in this remarkable miracle:

1. you and I are naturally fruit-less, but by God’s power, can be transformed into a life of great fruitfulness. How is this achieved? By dwelling in the presence of God (our Tent of Meeting).
2. our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ died on a dead ‘tree’, and when He died He committed His spirit into His Father’s hands (Luke 23v46). But through His death and glorious resurrection He has secured wonderful fruitfulness in terms of people around the globe being born again, producing the Fruit of the Spirit in their lives.
It is also very significant that almonds are highly nutritious and extremely healthy. One website I consulted concluded that “almonds are as close to perfect as a food can get”. Would we expect God to use any other picture?!
